2011 August

Dear Family and Friends,

Greetings from Ethiopia! For all of you who have been closely following our activities over the past year or so, you know that we now have three school campuses operating here in the Ziway area. We have a Primary School and a Pre-School (Nursery and Kindergarten) in Ziway and an additional Pre-School in the nearby town of Adami Tulu. The current Primary School has only five classrooms. This past school year those classrooms contained grades one through five.

This coming school year those five classrooms will hold grades two through six, since we do have one classroom at the Pre-School where we can put first grade. However, for the following school year we will be completely out of space, especially since we are now adding two Nursery classes per year. Eventually, our goal is to have two classrooms each of all grades from Nursery through eighth grade.

That means we must add at least twelve classrooms to accommodate two classrooms each of eight grades plus a computer lab. This need for more classroom space has been weighing heavily on us, as we feel like we have made some sort of commitment to our current students to educate them at least up to eighth grade.

Our good friends at Lifesong for Orphans generously sponsored the current Primary School building, along with feeding center, playground equipment, water facilities, etc. Unknown to us at the time of their planning, several of our friends in the Van Wert, Ohio area have decided to conduct a big fund raiser to help put the finances over the top to build the remainder of our school.

Van Wert, OH, is Peggy's home town, so of course we have a strong connection there. And the need is great enough and the dedication of our friends is heartwarming enough, that we feel we must do what we can to promote their efforts.

If you live in the eastern Indiana/western Ohio area we hope that you can attend this hog roast along with a fund raising walk, or if you prefer--a "Hog Walk." If you can't attend we have shown the address below where you can still donate money anyway.

Here is the schedule:

Date: Saturday, August 27
Time: 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. with food being served from 4:00 to 6:00
Location: Hiestand Woods Park in Van Wert, OH (near Van Wert County Hospital and Rotary Park-Reservoir Recreation Area)
Food: Pork sandwiches, hamburgers, plus all the trimmings
Activities: Fund-raising walk, T-shirts, Musical groups, maybe even Ethiopian coffee (and more)

If you are not able to attend, but would still like to help out, you may send a tax-deductible contribution to the following address:

Gridley, IL 61744

Also related to Van Wert is an article here (Ginny's Newspaper Article) about our niece who was in Ziway the past school year helping to get our new school started and acting as co-director of the school.

For you social media fans, here is the Facebook page for the "Hog-Walk" (and other subjects). Van Wert Hog Walk

A big "thank you" to all who can lend us a hand in educating and feeding our students.

God's Blessings,

Gary and Peggy
