ADAMI TULU NURSERY SCHOOL
Complete

Several years ago the Meserete Kristos Church, the church with which Misgana Ministries is partnering, opened a small nursery school in the next town south of Ziway called Adami Tulu. With two shifts of students, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, they accommodated nearly 150 students.

Unfortunately, in 2007, because of lack of funds, the school was closed. Because the compound was not being used, the government sent notice that they were going to take it back, and give it to investors not of the Christian faith.

The plot of land is large and very functional, lying just off a main paved road that extends from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, all the way down to Kenya. Understanding how hard it is to get good land and the utility of this piece of land, Misgana Ministries decided to do everything possible to save the property.

Thanks to generosity of a few donors, we were able to re-open the school. The building has been maintained, and some improvements have been made thanks to a couple of volunteers who divided the one large classroom into two smaller rooms. This allows us to offer both a nursery class and a kindergarten class. The Nursery School alone consists of two classes with a total of 80 students.

Our goal is to eventually have two classes of each Nursery, Lower Kindergarten, and Upper Kindergarten. That means we need to add at least four more classrooms.

Another improvement Misgana Ministries was able to implement was the addition of a feeding program, similar to the primary school in Ziway. Prior to the feeding program, the children only attended school for a half a day. Now, because they are served a nutritious breakfast and lunch, the children are able to attend school all day. According to the parents, teachers, and community leaders they are healthier and more attentive.

The school compound at Adami Tulu is an excellent piece of property with tremendous potential for future development. We are one of only three nursery schools in this town, and the need is tremendous. The government schools do not offer nursery or kindergarten classes, so students who have the opportunity to attend them fare much better. This is also a very poor town, and the opportunity for students to have both breakfast and lunch is a great service and witness in this predominately Muslim community.
